La difficile mise en valeur du marais rochefortais, 1750-1789

Dans cet article approfondissant une partie de sa thèse sur les » Paysans d'Aunis à la veille de la Révolution «, l'auteur décrit les caractères originaux de l'exploitation des marais desséchés rochefortais par rapport à ceux des autres marais de l'Aunis durant les quatre décennies précédant 1789.

À partir d'une analyse des structures agraires, illustrée par des études d'exploitations, sont mises en évidence les difficultés d'un milieu rural. En évitant une approche téléologique de l'histoire de l'éclatement de la Révolution, cette contribution permet de comprendre le marasme qui touche ces campagnes, sans issue apparente dans le système d'Ancien Régime.

1750-1789: A PERIOD OF TOIL AND TROUBLE IN THE EXPLOITATION OF THE ROCHEFORT MARSHLAND TERRITORY

In this article, developing one aspect of his thesis “Les Paysans d’Aunis à la veille de la Révolution”*, the author emphasizes the specific characteristics of farming techniques on the Rochefort reclaimed marshland grounds, in comparison with other marshland areas in the Aunis region during the four decades preceding 1789.

Proceeding from an analysis of agricultural structures based on studies of the local farming organization, this contribution sets into relief the many difficulties then and there endured in the country. Thus avoiding to approach the subject of the Revolution outbreak from a teleological* point of view, it further helps us to understand the plight of the rural people, who could see no possible way of improving their lot under the system of the Ancien Régime.
* i.e. exposing history in function of a single final outcome ( in the present instance, outbreak of the French Revolution ).
